What Are the Benefits of a Martingale Collar? PALOPA

What are the advantages of a pull stop collar?

The collar is one of the most important everyday accessories in a dog's life. It not only serves as an identification feature but also as a leash attachment and contributes to the dog's safety. In addition to the classic collar or harness, a special type of collar is the martingale collar. This can be used for daily walks or for training sessions with the dog.

To effectively use a martingale collar, there are some important aspects to consider, which we will explain in the following blog post.

How does a martingale collar work?

Martingale collars are practical, beautiful, and easy to use. The martingale collar has no buckle and can therefore be easily slipped over the head.

When tension is applied to the leash, the collar tightens. So-called stoppers, usually in the form of a metal ring or knot, are incorporated into the collar as tension limits. This prevents the dog from choking when pulling or injuries to the dog's neck area. Therefore, modern martingale collars are considered animal welfare compliant. In addition, the stopper prevents the dog from slipping out of the collar backward.

As soon as the dog stops pulling, the collar loosens again and sits comfortably on the dog's neck. The collar is also considered particularly gentle on the fur and is well suited for use even with long fur.

Is a martingale collar useful?

The advantages of such a collar are manifold:

  • Easy to use: Martingale collars are easy to handle. They can be put on and taken off in seconds. Just slip the collar over the dog's head – clip in the leash – and you're ready to go.
  • Suitable for almost all dog breeds: In principle, a martingale collar is suitable for every dog and every dog size. It is also suitable for all fur types, whether short-haired or long-haired. Especially for long-haired dogs, the collar is advantageous because the fur cannot get caught in the clasp.
  • Safety factor: Thanks to the stopper, your dog cannot free himself from the collar.

What size martingale collar does my dog need?

Optimal fit is particularly important for a martingale collar. To determine the correct size, the following measurements will help you.

Have your dog stand straight. Now measure his neck circumference – where the collar will lie. Then measure the circumference of his head – here it is important to measure where the circumference is largest. At its maximum width, the collar should fit comfortably over the dog's head. To determine the correct size, add two to three centimeters to the head circumference. This length is then the optimal size for your dog.

How to put on a martingale collar?

Based on the measured neck circumference, you then adjust the stopper – again with an allowance: The martingale collar should become as tight as a normal collar when pulled. Note that there should be about two fingers' width of space under the collar.
